Good MATE of mine told his missus on their wedding day that he had remortgaged their gaff for £125ik to pay off what he owed to bookies.... oh that was just the start... funnily enough they ain't together now and he's just come out of a 6 month stretch inside... all gambling related... reckon we are getting in the realms of nigh on £500k... owes MATES a good £200k I reckon overall.... all started on Alderbrook in the CH in 95... honestly thought that every inside bet would come off... unfortunately.... the vast majority don't.... do your own homework rather that rely on others... its far more profitable

I'm sorely disappointed.

I thought this was going to be a thread about robot sex toys.

I've just stuck a fiver on mane to score first at 6/1.

Returned as a free bet if salah score at any time.

That'll do me, the machines are a fucking disgrace and you need to be mental to play them.

It taps into the same thing religion does - stupid people who'd rather throw their last fiver into a wishing well than buy something to eat.

Oddly enough I am working at the ExCel this week on a huge gambling show called ice .

I have been on a few product launches /trade fairs all over Europe but this is by far the biggest show I've done.

It's not an "addiction". Its not like booze or benzo dependency where your body could shut down if you suddenly stop

Millions to one chance of winning the lottery > the chance of prayer making a difference.

Admittedly, prayer is free, but only if you don't do any of the things organised religions tell you to do to make it work better

Bingo, yep.

National lottery = working class stupidity tax.

Organic/Fair trade products = middle class stupidity tax.

Haute couture = millionaire/upper class stupidity tax.

Re: Slot machines
My best pal of 30 yrs was absolutely smashing the roulette slots in the bookies. He knew exactly what to do. It got to the point we were out one night and he needed cash. Instead of going to cash point he put he's last tenner in one of these. After a couple of spins he said il nick 600 out of this, and he did. I was shocked.
Anyways turns out he left he's job as a manager at next and was touring about playing all the roulette slots before getting banned at most bookies. He would travel miles.
I didn't see him for a few months then the calls started asking to borrow money. He started lying I eventually found out to play these machines, I thought he was still working.
I told him.to get help until the amount he owed me got to almost 2K.
I lent him my holiday spending money as he said he got paid that Friday and I never saw a penny. I thought he was still working.
Agreed to meet me to give me cash never turned up.
We were good pals but I wasn't being lied to also my offer of helping him to get help he never accepted.
Apparently the machines changed the way he was used to them for months and he lost everything.

I have met a bookie who later went bankrupt.

He struck me as a very stupid man.

Re: Slot machines
don't they by law have the payout on them? - something like 75% on average so everyone knows it's a guaranteed loser long term. like roulette at a casino - house can't lose

Re: Slot machines
I remember the last season at Upton Park I was walking to the ground with a pal and really needed to piss. He loves a bet and informed me that a bookies has to have a toilet by law.

I dived into one on Green St and suddenly realised I had never been into one in my whole life.

There wasn't a single white person in this particular shop, just loads of frankly desperate looking Asians and the odd black bloke. They honestly looked just one notch above homeless.

I had to ask for the key to the bog and I honestly didn't think toilets like that existed in a first world country. It fucking STANK like it had never been cleaned ever. It was almost greasy.

Next time I need a bog that badly I'll just piss myself I think. The toilet wasn't even the most disturbing thing though, it was all the worried faces staring up into TV screens.

Fuck that.

Is their no app yet that tells you when one's going to pay out?

Modern smartphones are rubbish.

Tax on the poor isn't it. A bit like lottery tickets.

Re: Slot machines
I'll use the term loosely but one of the worst things I did was win a 100 quid jackpot , I have always stuck a bit of change in them and the odd fiver but after that win I would put change in plus a fiver and then a ten pound note.

Even the odd 20.

Now I'm just back to change , if I bother at all.

Re: Slot machines
If it wasnt for the machines, most betting would be done online now.

They keep the bookies open.

Re: Slot machines
My plan would be this:

Lock all the doors of the betting shop

Allow the punters who go in just to put the bet on to leave.

Take all the staff out.

Now you have all the people who spend the whole afternoon left.

Gas them.

The benefits to society would be immense.

Re: Slot machines
I had a bit of a problem with fruit machines when I was about 14/15.

At the time, my uncle had a butchers shop and I helped him out one Saturday from about 6am-6pm. It was easy enough but I was still there all day, but having a laugh too, and he gave me £12 all in pound coins as a thank you.

That same night I went to our local club and stuck £12 in the fruit machine and won fuck all. In fact it was all gone in about five minutes, I remember thinking “I’ve just worked 12 hours for that money and now it’s all gone.” From that day on never got involved with them again. Probably the best £12 I ever spent!

A few family members have had gambling problems but there’s nothing wrong with betting in moderation and gambling what you’re prepared to lose. It add loads of interest and you can also get some decent returns at times. As soon as you start to chase your losses you’re on a slippery slope.

We all know those people who seem to win on bets all the time. They don’t. They just never tell you about their losses.
